I scream, you scream we all scream for… a meatball sundae? Maybe not, but it is a good illustration of two things that, when slapped together, just don’t fit. In today’s book, Meatball Sundae: Is Your Marketing out of Sync?, Seth Godin uses the concept of combining a ground meat sphere with a yummy dairy treat to show how unappetizing it can be when you combine things that don’t really go together.
The old way of operating is a good way to run your business into the ground. We must get our message in sync with our customers and understand their needs. There is too much clutter for anything but a focused message to reach the customers that need your product or services. You can use a ton of tricks and tips to reach your customers but if you don’t know what they want, all you’re building is a meatball sundae, not something I would want to eat.
Today I am going to discuss a takeaway idea from the Meatball Sundae. As with any book, there are tons more great ideas that can be gleaned from the pages so be sure to check this one out; you never know where you’ll discover your next big idea.
Takeaway #1 from Meatball Sundae
This takeaway idea is from page 184,
“If you want to thrive, you need to do two things: Make something worth talking about and make it easy to talk about.”
In a recent post about an alternative Valentines gift, Andy Sernovitz talks about a seemingly out of sync idea; a beef jerky bouquet. The last few lines got me thinking about Meatball Sundae. Andy suggests that word of mouth marketing is easy if you just give something to talk about. He has a point but, as Seth Godin said in the book, making something worth talking about is only half the equation; you must make it easy to talk about.
In today’s world, we have so many channels to talk about things. There is Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Yelp, and on and on and on. Seems like a new social media website is popping up almost everyday. As businesses, it’s our responsibility to make it easy for our customers to talk about and share our products and services. Sure, you can let everyone do their own thing but random conversations won’t help business. We must help the conversation and by doing so, we help the customers interact with each other and even gain a little insight into the wants and needs of our customers.
Customers no longer want to be sold to, they want to be understood. Let’s start listening and interacting.
If you haven’t read it yet, Meatball Sundae: Is Your Marketing out of Sync? by Seth Godin is a great book and I highly suggest that you put it on your reading list, along with the rest of his books. Remember, just one idea can change your life and who knows, this book may help you find it. This takeaway idea is just a small piece of the great ideas in the book. Go read it for yourself and let it change your life.
