Welcome to Can You Etch It, the web’s first laser engraving series that specializes in laser engraving strange, unique, and even common items. Today I’ll create a unique wooden postcard.
Have you ever received a postcard? Maybe one from a far away place or somewhere you’d like to visit? Although they are not as popular now, postcards offer a way for us and others to share images, memories, and updates from travels. A handwritten note is always appreciated and the recipient is sure to enjoy the picture.
One problem with most postcards is they are mass produced. Sure, the pictures are often amazing, but if you want something customized or unique, there are not many options. You can get postcards printed with your own pictures but this time, we are going to add something useful to our postcard, a map.
One of the great things about travel is the food. Your area may have great BBQ or chili but just a few states over, it is completely different and equally as good. Local restaurants and specialty dishes are fun to find and enjoy. Even chain restaurants are new to you can offer an interesting experience. Why not add a map of the great restaurants we visit to the postcard?
Why create a laser engraved wooden postcard?
Of all the ways to create a custom postcard, laser engraving is one of the most unique. Add a map of the places you visited and you will have a truly one-of-a-kind keepsake or gift. If the keepsake or gift is made from something durable like wood, it is likely that you will have it around for years. In my case, it is 18 years and counting.
18 years ago, when traveling in Washington state, I bought a wooden postcard from Mount Rainier National Park. It was such a unique idea I just had to have one. Who knew I would still have it 18 years later.
For this postcard, the idea was to remind us of the great food and to add the unique touch of having a map to the restaurants. It was a short trip and I visited three restaurants: Central BBQ, Soul Fish Cafe, and Celtic Crossing. The map was created in Google Maps. Just a little cutting and pasting and now we have a background for our postcard.
To add a little extra touch, I added the Central BBQ logo to the design. I forgot to take a picture when I was there but found a great one on Flickr by the Southern Foodways Alliance. I think it adds a great touch.
Here is the video showing the postcard being engraved. The engraving took almost 10 minutes to complete so the video is sped up. At the end of the video you can see the final result. For more pictures, check out the end of the post.
